Global Goals Local Leaders
Becoming a community leader involves several steps, and the exact approach may depend on the specific community and context.
Here at the UNA, we are focused on championing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our own communities. That means partnering with local nonprofits and other organizations who are already doing the important work to reach each individual goal.
At the core, we believe that while the goals may be global, the work is inherently local.
Each of the 17 SDGs applies with equal measure to our community in Sacramento as it does to communities on the other side of the world. And the framework established by the SDGs is just as useful and impactful for us as it is for local leaders in other countries.
Our poverty might look different than poverty looks in Bangladesh. But it is still here, intractable, and a necessary challenge to overcome in order for Sacramento to reach its full potential. The same could be said for every other one of the sustainable development goals.
And so we are dedicated to participating actively in our community. We attend meetings and events of other organizations, contribute to community discussions, and offer your skills and expertise to help with their initiatives. By bringing the language of the Global Goals into local action, we can broaden and expand the significance of local action.
We work to build relationships and forge connections with other community members. By collaborating with leaders and influencers, we work to bridge gaps and ensure that the right message is reaching those who can do something about the critical issues we face. As part of this, we are proud to host the “Global Goals Local Leaders” event series which invites policy makers, practitioners, advocates, academics, and everyday residents into the same space for a value-based forum that results in tangible takeaways for attendees and participants. By facilitating cross-collaborative conversations with the change makers in our community, we are committed to recognizing the global goals here at home.
We engage in advocacy on a local, regional, and national level to ensure that there is a strong voice of support for the values and principles of the United Nations at all levels of our government.
By taking initiative, supporting the development of local leaders, and proactively engaging with other community organizations, we remain dedicated to developing local solutions that can achieve global goals.
And you are every bit the local leader that our community needs.
Joining our movement is easy. And now is the time for you to help us build a stronger and more resilient Sacramento that works better for everyone.
