Over the past several decades, 40 nations have reckoned with historical injustice and its aftermath through forming Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, and the United Nations has often played an important role in helping countries create them and facilitating their work once established.

In light of the killing of George Floyd and the inequalities surfaced by COVID-19, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) has introduced a resolution, H.Con.Res.100, which calls for the formation of a U.S. Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Commission. Congresswoman Lee's resolution is an essential element in any process to address and hopefully, ultimately extinguish racial injustice in this country and is reflective of principles and processes advocated for by the UN since its founding.

This is a moment of choice for every American. The racial injustice, inequality, and divisions that are tearing us apart can only be overcome by all of us, and a task that must unite us in urgent and common purpose. It will not be easy. We will need to confront hard truths. Over the past several decades, many nations have reckoned with historical injustice and its aftermath through forming Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, and the United Nations has often played an important role in helping countries create them and facilitating their work once established. These types of commissions are so important because the questions of why certain events were allowed to happen can be as important as explaining precisely what happened. Ultimately, it is hoped that the work of the commission can help a country acknowledge a contested or denied history, and in doing so bring the voices and stories of victims, often hidden from public view, to the public at large. A truth commission also hopes to prevent further abuses through specific recommendations for institutional and policy reforms. So I hope you will support Congresswoman Lee’s resolution.
