What is the United Nations Association?

UNA at the Capitol building in Washington, DC

More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that, my friends, is why we have the United Nations
— Kofi Annan

The United Nations Association (UNA) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in 1943 by a passionate group of Americans committed to building an organization that could win the peace following World War II. The UNA played an instrumental role in the creation of the UN Charter and its ratification by Congress.

Our mission is simple: To engage and educate people about the work of the UN, promote its goals and objectives, and advocate for its values and principles.

Each UNA chapter is proud to advocate and educate on a variety of issues related to the UN's work, including peace and security, human rights, sustainable development, climate change, and global health.

To do this, local chapters engage in a wide range of community activities, such as organizing events and conferences, publishing reports and policy papers, and engaging with policymakers and other stakeholders. We also work to educate and empower individuals to take action on global issues, and to build bridges between local communities and the UN.

Overall, the UNA plays an important role in promoting and advancing the goals and values of the UN, and in mobilizing support for its work around the world.

Our nationwide network is committed to strengthening the United Nations system, promoting constructive United States leadership in that system, and achieving the goals set forth in the UN Charter. UNA-USA is a program of the United Nations Foundation. UNA-USA and its partner organization, the Better World Campaign, comprise the largest network of UN advocates in the world.
