A Glimpse of the UN’s Work on the Ground
“The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF are intensifying their efforts to reverse the dire malnutrition situation in South Sudan, where a brutal conflict has displaced millions of people, destroyed basic services, increased disease, and exacerbated hunger. UNICEF and WFP launched an enhanced joint nutrition response plan, which saw both agencies and their partners assist over two million people – children, pregnant women, and new mothers – for the treatment and prevention of acute malnutrition in the country. The two agencies began the joint nutrition approach to expand their lifesaving work.
The delegation made a field visit to an Outpatient Therapeutic Programme and Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme site in the nearby village of Maduany. With the support of UNICEF and WFP, as well as other donors and partners, testing and treatment is carried out by Concern and Health Pooled Fund. Here, children have their middle upper arm circumference (MUAC) and weight measured, to assess presence (if any) and severity of malnutrition.”
Ashley is now saved and ready to resume school – her baby was named Gladys, a tribute to the UN police officer who supported her.”
